Your Journey with Cochlear Implantation Starts Now :

Cochlear implantation is considered a true revolution in hearing technology for individuals who suffer from severe hearing loss and do not benefit from the use of hearing aids (medical hearing devices).

The cochlear implant journey is a long-term commitment to a structured guidance and comprehensive rehabilitation program, aiming to achieve successful hearing outcomes, effective communication, and an improved quality of life.

These advanced electronic devices, which are surgically implanted with high precision, are designed to restore hearing by directly stimulating the auditory nerve.

Components of the Cochlear Implant Device

The cochlear implant system consists of two main parts:

External component: Worn behind the ear and includes a microphone and a speech processor.

Internal component: Surgically implanted in the inner ear and contains electrodes that stimulate the auditory nerve.

The external microphone captures sound and sends it to the speech processor, where the sound signal is converted into electrical impulses. These impulses are transmitted through the skin to the internal receiver and cochlear electrodes, stimulating the auditory nerve and allowing sound signals to travel through the auditory pathway to the hearing centers in the brain.

Who Can Benefit from Cochlear Implantation?

Cochlear implants are suitable for children and adults with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who are unable to benefit from hearing aids despite consistent use, and who have difficulty understanding speech.

It is essential that the candidate has strong motivation, determination, and family support, in addition to the absence of medical conditions that may prevent cochlear implantation.

What Are the Steps of Cochlear Implantation?

Preoperative evaluation: A comprehensive assessment including hearing tests, language evaluation, CT scan, MRI, and a full medical examination to determine candidacy for cochlear implantation.

Counseling session: A detailed counseling session with the patient and the child’s family to explain the entire journey and set realistic expectations.

Surgery: Performed under general anesthesia, lasting approximately 2 to 5 hours, followed by a short recovery period.

Cochlear implant activation day: The first appointment a few weeks after surgery, during which the audiologist activates and programs the implant, allowing the recipient to hear sound for the first time.

Follow-Up and Rehabilitation

Regular programming (mapping) sessions are scheduled to achieve clear, audible, and understandable sound levels. Continuous speech and language rehabilitation sessions are also essential, conducted by a speech-language pathologist and consultant.

Speech therapy plays a vital role in maximizing the benefits of cochlear implantation.

Final Note

Patience is essential during the adaptation period with the cochlear implant. We emphasize our full and continuous support throughout every stage of the journey, until the maximum benefit is achieved, God willing.
